Beef and Rice

Today, I will show you how to make a type of Korean style DeopBaps. As I said, there are many different kinds of DeopBaps in Korea. Wait, you will start to wonder, what is DeopBaps. hehe… It is a Korean word for a certain type of dish – If you serve some food (usually cooked with different kinds of meat, vegetables, and sauce) on top of rice, and you mix the rice with the food before eating, we call that kind of dish, DeopBap. The SoGoGi DeopBap that I’m going to make today is a non spicy type of DeaopBap. The beef has bulgogi flavor, and there are many kinds of vegetables in this dish. Later, I will post different kinds of DeopBaps. See you soon again~~~

Short Korean Lesson: *^^*

  • DeopBap (덮밥) = The name for the Korean dish which has vegetable and/or meat sauce on top of rice that gets mixed together before eating.
  • BeoSeot (버섯) = Mushroom

For Beef:

Main Ingredients:

  • 2 to 3 Bowls Cooked Rice
  • ½ Onion
  • ⅔ Cup Zucchini
  • ½ Cup Carrot
  • 2 Green Onions
  • 3 Button Mushrooms
  • ½ Cup Sweet Peppers (Optional)
  • 1 or 2 Hot Peppers (Optional)

Sauce Ingredients:

  • ⅔ Tbsp Soy Sauce
  • 1 tsp Sugar
  • 2 Tbsp Oil
  • ½ Tbsp Sesame Oil
  • 1 tsp Sesame Seeds
  • 1½ tsp Minced Garlic
  • ¼ tsp Salt
  • 3 Pinches Black Pepper Powder

Starch Mixture:

  • ½ Cup Water
  • 1 Tbsp Corn Starch (or Potato Starch)

Yield: About 2-3 Servings

Slice 1½ cups of beef thinly. You can use any kind of beef cuts you like. This time, I used London broil.

beef_and_rice_03-
Cut ¼ of an onion and ½ of an Asian pear. Prepare 3 or 4 cloves of garlic.

beef_and_rice_04-
In a mixer, add the onion, pear, garlic, 2½ Tbsp of soy sauce, ½ Tbsp of sugar, ½ Tbsp of sesame oil, 3 pinches of black pepper powder, and 1 pinch of ginger powder. Grind them together.

beef_and_rice_05-
Pour the mixture to the beef. Tip: If you have some leftover marinated beef (bulgogi) or frozen bulgogi, you can skip this part and just use them.

beef_and_rice_06-
Mix the beef well. Cover it with plastic wrap and marinated it in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours.

beef_and_rice_07-
Cut ½ of an onion, ⅔ cup of a zucchini, ½ cup of a carrot, 2 green onions, 3 mushrooms, ½ cup of a sweet pepper (Optional), and 1 or 2 hot peppers (Optional).

beef_and_rice_08-
In a pan, add 2 Tbsp of oil. Once the pan is heated, add 1½ tsp of minced garlic. Fry them for 10 second on medium. Add the onion, carrot, zucchini, and sweet peppers. Fry for 1 to 2 more minutes on medium-high.

beef_and_rice_09-
Add the marinated beef and the rest of the ingredients for the sauce: ⅔ Tbsp Soy Sauce, 1 tsp Sugar, 2 Tbsp Oil, ½ Tbsp Sesame Oil, 1 tsp Sesame Seeds, ¼ tsp Salt, and 3 Pinches Black Pepper Powder.

beef_and_rice_10-
To make the starch mixture, combine ½ cup water and 1 Tbsp of corn starch (or potato starch). This mixture will help make the sauce thicker.

beef_and_rice_11-
When the beef is half cooked, pour the starch mixture in it. Cook it until the beef is completely cooked on medium-high.

beef_and_rice_12-
Add the chopped mushrooms and green onions. Cook for 3 more minutes on high.

beef_and_rice_13-
If you like your food spicy like me, add some hot peppers when you add the mushrooms and green onions. It’s optional.

beef_and_rice_14-
After 3 minutes, it’s done.

beef_and_rice_15-
To serve, place one bowl of cooked rice on a plate for each serving.

Beef and Rice

Pour the cooked beef and vegetables with sauce on top of the rice. Sprinkle some sesame seeds on top. Enjoy~~

Hello Aeri! I’m a recent fan of your blog and videos. ^^ I have yet to try making your dishes, but I’ve been compiling the recipes so I can go buy the ingredients properly, and hopefully I won’t be too bad with it when I get around to cooking your dishes. ^^;;

But my question is.. many of your dishes have zucchini in it. I am aware Koreans tend to use this in several Korean dishes, but would it be okay for me to use guava instead? I know that sounds a little far out there, but I suddenly thought it would taste really well with the beef. Let me know what you think of this crazy idea!

oooh :D that looks mouthwatering delicious.

The style looks a bit like what my mom makes from time to time, only she adds glass noodles and the sauce is different :)
