Today, I will show you how to make a very popular Korean chicken dish, DakDoriTang. It is chicken and vegetables cooked with a spicy sauce to give it great flavor. Depending on your tastes, you can add or reduce the amount of red pepper powder and red pepper paste. My husband and I enjoyed this dish very much the other day. I hope you will like this too.
Yield: 4 Servings
Short Korean Lesson
- Kal (칼) = Knife
- DoMa (도마) = Cutting Board
Video Instructions
Main Ingredients
- 1 Whole Chicken (4 LB)
- 2 Cups Onion
- 2 Cups Potato
- 1 Cup Carrot
- 3 Green Onions
- 1-2 Hot Peppers (Optional)
- 1½ Cups Water
For Chicken
- 1 Tbsp Cooking Wine
- ¼ tsp Salt
- ⅛ tsp Black Pepper Powder
Sauce Ingredients
- 5 Tbsp Red Pepper Paste
- 3 Tbsp Red Pepper Powder
- 2 Tbsp Soy Sauce
- ½ Tbsp Cooking Wine (or Water)
- 1 Tbsp Sugar
- 1 Tbsp Corn Syrup
- 2 Tbsp Minced Garlic
- 1 tsp Sesame Seeds
- 1 tsp Sesame Oil
- 1 Pinch Black Pepper Powder
Directions
Cut the chicken into 2×2 inch pieces. Don’t remove the skin, fat, or bones because that gives it good flavor.
Marinate the chicken with 1 Tbsp of cooking wine, ¼ tsp of salt, and ⅛ tsp of black pepper powder for at least 10 minutes.
Combine 5 Tbsp of red pepper paste, 3 Tbsp of red pepper powder, 2 Tbsp of soy sauce, ½ Tbsp of cooking wine, 1 Tbsp of sugar, 1 Tbsp of corn syrup, 2 Tbsp of minced garlic, 1 tsp of sesame seeds, 1 tsp of sesame oil, and 1 pinch of black pepper powder.
Mix the ingredients.
Cut 2 cups of onions, 2 cups of potatoes, 1 cup of carrots, 3 green onions, and 1 or 2 hot peppers into big chunk (1 or 1½ inch cubes).
Place the chicken in a big pan.
Add the potatoes, onions, and carrots on top of the chicken.
Pour the sauce on top.
Then pour 1½ cups of water on it.
While it is cooking, occasionally stir it so that all of the ingredients get covered with the sauce. Cook it for 30 to 35 minutes on high, or until the chicken and potatoes are completely cooked.
Reduce the temperature to low and add the green onions along with the hot peppers. Cook 2 more minutes and then turn off the heat. If you don’t want your food too spicy, skip the hot peppers.
Serve this dish with rice and other Korean side dishes. You can also pour some of this on top of rice for a main course in the same way as curry and rice. Enjoy this delicious Korean food.

hi Vanessa,
Yes, my husband always like this dish whenever I cook. 🙂 Thanks for your comment.
hi, Aeri… i found out your recipe last night, i wanna try it. it seems so delicious, but I have problem here, in your recipe, to make dakdoritang we add some wine. how bout if i don’t use it? u know, i am Muslim, and i’m so curious to try this, so can i not use wine? how bout the taste, will be different or not? thank you and nice to meet you… 🙂
hi Asurie,
if you see cooking wine in my recipe, it is usually not critical and small amount.. so you can skip it… or replace it with water.. Thansk.
Hi Aeri~ Thank you for your recipes! I just have one question.. 김치닭도리탕 만드려면 양념 줄여야되나요? 얼마나줄여야 하나요~?^^ 😛
hi ShinYoung,
Yes, since the kimchi will have spicy and salty flavor.. just follow the recipe and do not use all the sauce.. but adjust the amount later.. like use 1/2 or 2/3 of the sauce for cooking with your kimchi.. then later taste it to see if you need more sauce in it or not. 🙂
HI AERI I JUST WANT TO SAY I LOVE YOU AND I LOVE THE FOOD YOU MAKE 😛
SAUDI ARABIA
hi Aeri, i was wondering can i use Oligodang in replace of the sugar and corn syrup
hi stacey,
You are right. You can do that.. adjust the sweetness with it. 🙂 thanks
I made this last night (with a few variations)and it was YUMMY 😀 😀. I did not use red pepper powder as my 2 year old would be eating it. I also used 6 tablespoons of Gochujang instead of 5. And instead of sugar I used honey. Great recipe! Thanks
That must be yummy right?
Right. Delicious ~~ 🙂
Hi aeri, i love your website my boyfriend is korean and i’m trying to learn how to cook more korean food your videos have helped me out soooooooo much. I’m going to make this tonight and surprize him i am also going to make the fish cakes as well thank you so much 😛
Hi Aerie,
I’m new to your site and I’m thrilled that I found it. For this recipe, would I be able to substitute the corn syrup with something else, such as sugar? If so, do you know how much of it to use? I don’t have corn syrup at the moment!
Thank you:)
hi Ruki,
Yes, you can use sugar instead.. just start from.. smaller amount (1/2 to 2/3) of sugar instead from the corn syrup amount in the recipe..and then.. depending on your taste.. adjust the sweetness.. thanks
Ooooh! I made this today (with a little added tofu)… SOOO DELICIOUS ^_^ Thanks! This is going on the Sunday dinner list.
Hi Aeri,
I made this today with some changes since I’m vegetarian. I used tofu and some extra veggies and adjusted the sauce. It turned out great. Luv your recipes!
hi aeri! i dont have corn syrup.. what can i use instead?
hi Aeri!what if i dont have corn syrup?what can i use instead?thanks!!!
hi kim choi,
You can use sugar instead. thanks 🙂
Hi Aeri, Made this last night and it was delicious! I just added a bit of ground perilla seeds at the end. My husband loved it!!!
Aeri, what is the equivalent to corn syrup if you use sugar instead? Let’s say your recipe calls for two tablespoons? How much sugar would you use in its place? I don’t really like sweetness in my food, but I know this is common for Korean food to be somewhat sweet. How sweet are most of the recipes on your site that call for corn syrup or sugar? Thank you!
hi Heather,
If you don’t like sweet flavor in your food.. just adjust the sweetness on your taste.. so if the recipe calls 2 Tbsp.. start from half amount of it.. 1 Tbsp..taste it..and add more if it needs.. it’s hard to tell how sweet they are..because.. to me.. it is just normal..but the word “normal ” can be too personal opinion.. ^^
Hi Aeri, this dish is very delicious. im from philippines and my husband is korean so i often cook korean food using your recipes. thank you:)
