GamJa JoRim is an easy and delicious non-spicy Korean side dish using potatoes. The flavor of soy sauce mixed with a little sweetness and the texture of potatoes gives you a great taste. Although you can make a small amount of this side dish for one meal, you can also make a lot and keep it in the refrigerator. It is a popular side dish for school lunch boxes in Korea. I hope you will like this. It has been while since I made a post. I was very happy to do this again. More recipes will be posted as I get back into the swing of things. hehe
Thank you very much for all the comments and kind words about my son’s birth. I’m sorry that I couldn’t reply to every single message, but I really enjoyed reading your messages. I almost feel normal again, and Bryson is doing very good. He makes me happy everyday, even though I feel tired.
Yield: 2 Servings
Short Korean Lesson: *^^*
- MulYeout (물엿) = Corn Syrup
- Ggul (꿀) = Honey
Video Instructions
Main Ingredients
- 3 Medium Sized Potatoes (2 Cups)
- ½ Cup Water
- 2 Tbsp Oil
- 2½ Tbsp Soy Sauce
- 2 Tbsp Corn Syrup
- 1-1½ Tbsp Sugar
- 1 Tbsp Minced Garlic
- ⅛ tsp Fine Sea Salt
- ½ tsp Sesame Seeds
Directions
Cut 3 medium sized potatoes (2 cups) into ½-inch cubes.
In a heated pan, with 2 Tbsp of oil, add the chopped potatoes.
Fry the potatoes for 5 minutes on medium-high until they are about ⅓ cooked.
After 5 minutes, add ½ cup of water, 2½ Tbsp of soy sauce, 2 Tbsp of corn syrup, 1-1½ Tbsp of sugar, and 1 Tbsp of minced garlic.
Cook it for 5 more minutes on medium-high.
Taste it and if you need to, add up to ⅛ tsp of fine sea salt depending on your tastes.
Cook until the liquid is reduced to a paste, which should take about 5 minutes.
Reduce the temperature to medium and fry 5 to 7 more minutes until the potatoes are completely cooked. Then add ½ tsp of sesame seeds.
It is done.

This side dish tastes good whether it is warm or cool. Serve it with rice and other Korean side dishes. Enjoy!

Good morning Aeri,
I was wondering if you had a recipe for making Korean potato salad? I tried it as side dish once before while I was traveling. I loved it so much. I prefer the flavor over the American potato salad.
Thanks.
hi Bao,
I didn’t post it yet..but I’m going to post it someday. Thanks
Hi Aeri,
just wondering if i don’t have sesame seeds, can i use sesame oil instead? if so, how much do i put in?
i hope i will make it as good as you do!
thank you very much!
hi Cindy,
I will say.. just skip the sesame seeds..and don’t put any sesame oil.. sesame seeds are more for garnishing..and it is just a little bit of extra flavor.. so you can skip it. but sesame oil can change the own flavor.. I prefer it without sesame oil flavor.. so ^^

Your precious baby boy is absolutely adorable! Love your blog and I have a request. I’m a native Texan who loves all varieties of cuisine. There’s an amazing supermarket in my area called Super H Mart that’s primarily a Korean store. I want to learn to cook more Korean dishes and use the wonderful ingredients that are available to me. When you blog could you give some more descriptions and English translations for the Korean ingredients you cook with for those of us who want to learn to cook Korean but aren’t familiar with the ingredients? Thanks so much!!!
hi Kearby,
Oh.. you have H mart around you ??? I really envy you. I don’t have that kind of big Korean grocery store around here. Your request is very valuable. I will try to do that in the future.. thanks for your good suggestion. Enjoy Korean cooking !!!
Hi,
I am happy to see the korean dishes in English. Right now I am korea and want to try korean dishes, so was looking for the recipe.
Just one request. Can you put the name of ingredients in English and korean both, so that it will be easy for me to buy from market. I will prepare the list and show the shop owner… ha ha haa… Thanks and please continue your nice work…
hi Vijay Deshmukh,
Nice to meet you. I will try to consider what you suggested. If you have any help for Korean or English names for Korean food ingredients..please let me know. I hope you have great time in Korea.
YUMMY! Can’t wait to try it out! Have a Merry Christmas with your family and your little bundle of blessings!
hi joy,
Thanks Happy new year !!!
It looks delicious, Aeri!
I hope that you enjoy Bryson’s first Christmas. Take care!
hi Meaghan,
Thanks for your message.. He cried a lot that night. @.@ But we were still very happy to have his first Christmas together. Happy new year.
Great to read your new post and that you and your son are doing well.
I love potatoes. This dish looks very tasty.
Ahh, another thing on the side, I have made tuna kimchi jjigae with your recipe and I really loved it. Thank you so much for that recipe. Especially the great tip of using can of tuna in oil made it taste so good.
Even though my kimchi wasn’t super sour , the kimchi jjigae still tasted delicious.
hi Poeh,
OH… kimchi jjigae.. you made me hungry for it. =P
Aha you love potatoes like me..hehe you have to try this recipe then.
