The Korean tofu side dish DoBu JoRim is an easy and delicious non-spicy side dish using tofu. The flavor of the soy sauce mixes with the sweetness of the other vegetables to give you a great taste. It is best to make a small amount of this side dish: only enough for one meal.
Yield: 3 Servings
Short Korean Lesson
- DoBu (두부) = Tofu
- Pa (파) = Green Onion
Video Instructions
Main Ingredients
- 1 Pack Firm Tofu
- ⅓ Cup Corn Starch or Flour
- ¼ Cup Onion (¼ Onion)
- ¼ Cup Carrot
- ¼ Cup Green Onion (2 Green onions)
- Some Oil for Frying
- Salt and Black Pepper
Sauce Ingredients
- 2 Tbsp Soy Sauce
- 3 Tbsp Water
- 2½ tsp Sugar
- 1 Tbsp Minced Garlic
- 1 Tbsp Sesame Oil
- 1 tsp Sesame Seeds
- 1 Pinch Black Pepper
Directions
Rinse 1 pack of firm tofu in water once, and then wipe off the water with a paper towel.
Divide the tofu in half and then slice it into half inch pieces.
Sprinkle some salt and black pepper on both sides of the sliced tofu. Set it aside while you are preparing the other ingredients. This process helps pull the water out of the tofu and gives it flavor.
Finely chop the onion, carrot, and green onion to make ¼ cup of each.
Add 2 Tbsp of soy sauce, 3 Tbsp of water, 2½ tsp of sugar, 1 Tbsp of minced garlic, 1 Tbsp of sesame oil, 1 tsp of sesame seeds, 1 pinch of black pepper, and the chopped vegetables in a small bowl. Mix them all together to make the sauce.
Prepare ⅓ cup of cornstarch or flour. Cover the tofu with some cornstarch. Personally, I prefer to use cornstarch for better flavor and texture.
In a heated non-stick pan, add 1 or 2 Tbsp of oil, and then place the tofu in the pan.
Fry both sides of the tofu until they become golden brown on medium-high.
In a heated pan or wok, add the fried tofu and the sauce.
Fry for 5 minutes on high.
Occasionally stir gently. Be careful not to break the tofu. 5 minutes later, the sauce will thicken.
Serve when it is warm with rice, soup, and other Korean side dishes. You can also eat it as a main dish if you want. I hope you like this recipe. Enjoy! 🙂

Aeri,
So happy to see new postings of your recipes! I am sure you are so busy with taking care of your baby, Bryson.
I just tried making this tofu dish tonight and it came out nice. I did miss some spiciness for the tofu, but it is good to stay away from spicy from time to time.
I was out of cornstarch and used potato starch instead. It was tasty and very easy to make.
Thanks for another winner!

Thank you for posting this, Aeri!
I’m on a low carb diet so I will try replacing the flour with either whole wheat flour or soy flour. And for the sugar I will try substituting it with agave nectar :). Other than my little changes this looks absolutely tasty! 😀
Aeri Lee says
hi Lisa,
The replacements you mentioned sounds okay to me.. yes try them. 🙂 thanks

Joshua Sung Hwan Jun says
Hi Mrs Aeri Lee,
My name is Joshua Jun. I washed the tofu once and wipe off with a paper towel. If it’s still wet, use a paper towel to check if it’s still wet. I divided the tofu in half and cut it into finger sized pieces such as pointy finger. I don’t need to put salt and pepper on both sides of the tofu so just leave the sliced tofu while I prepare the sauce ingredients but the process will help pull the water out of the tofu and it’ll give it flavor. While leaving the tofu, chop scallions, onions and carrots finely into 1/4 cup each. Get two tablespoons of soy sauce, three tablespoons of water, two in a half teaspoon of sugar, one tablespoon of minced garlic and sesame oil, one teaspoon of sesame seeds and a pinch of black pepper like sprinkle it a little with chopped vegetables such as carrot, and then mix them all together I don’t need to use flour or cornstarch so I’m following Maangchi’s way that I could use corn syrup. While the process pulls water out already, drain it to a strainer to make it easier using tofu. Add a cooking spray on a non stick heated pan and then place a sliced tofu. Add the tofu and lower the heat. Cook over low heat for five minutes until the bottom pieces turn golden brown and then turn over each piece and cook another five minutes. Add the sauce ingredients (mixing together using your way) and then use corn syrup (Maangchi’s way) to caramelize it so fry it for five minutes. Stir gently but be careful not to break the tofu and the sauce will be thicken for five minutes. Transfer the tofu into a serving plate.
Happy New Year and many blessings,
Joshua Jun
PS these are the things that I’m trying to make it easier to make fried tofu in soy sauce

Aeri,
This is the most delicious recipe I have ever tasted for tofu!!!!!! Wow! My family was so excited about this dish! I didn’t use the sugar, that was the only change I made. IT WAS DELICIOUS! Thank you for posting it. We’ll be trying your gam jajorim and the egg sandwich “toast” with cabbage and carrots. I don’t enjoy mayonnaise so I won’t use that but I’m thinking of making a sauce that’s similar to what you used here to put on the sandwich. Thank you so much again for posting this. It was fantastic. May God bless you and your family and whatever you put your hands to in the name of the Lord!
Aeri Lee says
