After watching today’s recipe, you wanted to try it but you felt that it seems too much work for you to make them? Okay, so I prepared a shortcut tip for you to try.
Yield: 12 Little Buns
Short Korean Lesson
- 충격 (ChungGyeok) = Shock
- 총격 (ChongGyeok) = Shooting
- 1 Can Pillsbury Buttermilk Biscuits
- ¾ Cup Sweet Red Bean Paste
Instead of making the bread dough from scratch, you can use 1 can of Pillsbury buttermilk biscuits. There are many different kinds of biscuits out there, but today I want to make cute mini-sized steamed buns, so I got a biscuit can that you can make 12 biscuits from it. This will make 12 little sweet bean paste steamed buns.
Gently push the line on the can with a spoon to pop open the biscuits. See we got 12 dough pieces for biscuits.
We need about ¾ cup of sweet red bean paste called “patang-geum”, 팥앙금 in Korean. You can pre-made one from a store like this one.
Or you can try my homemade red bean paste recipe and use it. I will divide the bean paste into 12 portion since we are going to make 12 steamed buns today. One portion will be 1 Tbsp which is about 0.5 oz.
Take each portion and make it a little ball. Do the same process for the rest to make 12 red bean balls. Start to boil water for a steamer.
This steamed bun has a paper on the bottom. So I will use this wax paper for the use. Cut 3 of about 2.5 inch width wax paper strips. Then combine the 3 papers and fold them into 4 pieces like this. Cut the folded section with a knife then you will 12 square papers.
Flaten 1 dough ball to make space for the bean paste ball.
Place a bean paste ball in the center of the flaten dough.
Seal the dough tightely so the bean paste will not come out while you are steaming the buns. (Please check how to do this in the video.)
Put the sealed part down to the wax paper. Do the same thing for the rest of the dough to make 12 buns.
Wrap your lid for the pot with a kitchen towel. This is a secret tip to steam smooth surface of the steamed buns. While the water is boiling, the steam can turn into a water and drop to your buns and make the buns wrinkly if you don’t use this kitchen towel for your lid.
Place 4 of the buns on the steamer with boiling water under.
Cover the lid and steam for about 15 minutes on high.
After 15 minutes, you can see your buns became bigger and fluffy. Take out the steamer from the stove and let it cool little bit. Later, take out your steamed buns.
