소세지 부침, SoSeJi BuChim
Posted by Aeri Lee on May 13, 2010

Korean fish-sausage jeon (소세지 부침) is one of the most popular lunch box side dishes from the good old days. When sausage was introduced to Koreans for the first time, it was big hit. Since then, Koreans started to make their own fish sausage like this. Later, we started eating ham, and ham eventually replaced fish sausage in different kinds of Korean food such as kimbap, salad, jeon, etc. Slowly this fish sausage became less popular and is an old fashioned food now. Sometimes I miss this dish. It brings back my school day memories, and it still tastes good to me.
Yield: 1½ Dozen Slices

순두부 찌개, SunDuBu JjiGae

It was amazing to get so many requests for extra soft tofu soup, soondubu jjigae. This proves that many people in the world like this soup. The broth is spicy and matches great with the extra soft tofu. With the same basic seasonings used in this soup, you can make a different variety such as beef or clam. You can also put both in as I did in this recipe. The kimchi is optional. I’m very happy with this recipe, so I hope you like this too.
Yield: 2 Servings
Short Korean Lesson: *^^*
- SaRangHaeYo (사랑해요) = I love you.
- JoAHaeYo (좋아해요) = I like you.

자반 고등어 구이, JaBan GoDeungEo GuI
Posted by Aeri Lee on October 10, 2009

Mackerel that is fried with a little salt is a common way to eat this fish in Korea. You can buy pre-salted mackerel from a Korean grocery store. The saltiness varies between brands. This post is not really much of a recipe because all I did was fry the fish, but I wanted to introduce you to this popular Korean side dish. Dark fish meat is very healthy and mackerel has omega-3 fatty acid in its dark meat. Try this delicious and healthy Korean dish someday. Thanks!
Yield: 2 Servings
Short Korean Lesson: *^^*
- GuI (구이) = A way of cooking: Frying on a pan or grill
- GoDeungEo (고등어) = Mackerel

생선까스, SaengSunKkas
Posted by Aeri Lee on September 20, 2009

SaengsunKkas is a deep fried white fish, which is popular in Korea. It was inspired by Western food. This fish is covered with egg, flour, and Korean breadcrumbs before frying. For an authentic taste, it is important to use fresh fish and Korean (or Japanese) breadcrumbs for this recipe. There are also similar dishes made with beef, pork, or chicken. For different meats, you will obviously need a different dipping sauce. I will post them later. For this recipe, the dipping sauce is tartar sauce. You can use your own tartar sauce. My sauce is a little sweet, so you might want to adjust the amount of the sugar.
Yield: 3 Servings
Short Korean Lesson: *^^*
- SaengSun (생선) = Fish
- Bbang GaRu (빵가루) = Bread Crumbs
