Just yummy Korean food this time. Kimchi fried rice. Like Kentuky Fried Chicken, only different.
For delicious fried kimchi rice, I want to tell you several things. First, good kimchi makes yummy fried kimchi rice. Well fermanted kichi is the best. Another thing is..Frying the kimchi first is important – don’t cheat.
I prefer to fry my rice a little crispy which takes longer to cook. (patience … hehe) You can add more sugar or salt depending on your taste.
Yield: 2 Servings
Short Korean Lesson: *^^*
- SikDahng (식당) = Restaurant
- EumSik (음식) = Food
Video Instructions
Main Ingredients
- 1 Cup Kimchi
- 2-3 tsp Sugar
- ½ tsp Salt
- 2 Tbsp Kimchi Liquid
- ½ tsp Sesame Oil
- 2 Eggs
- Some Sesame Seeds (to garnish)
- 2 Bowls of Cooked Rice
Directions
Cut 1 cup of kimchi to bite sized pieces.
Add some oil in the heated pan and fry the kimchi. Add 2-3 tsp of sugar depending on taste. Fry for about 5 minutes on medium-high.
Add 2 bowls of rice and ½ tsp of salt.Add 2 Tbsp of kimchi liquid and fry 10 more minutes.
When the rice gets enough kimchi flavor, add 1/2 tsp of sesame oil. Then fry 2 more minutes.
Fry eggs separately. (Add salt to taste) You can also fry them in the rice. If you want to fry the egg in the rice, break the eggs in a bowl and stir as you do for scramble eggs. Pour the egg in the fried rice and stir. When the eggs are cooked, its’ done.

Place the fried eggs on the plate, and put the rice on top of the eggs.

Oh my gosh I made this this morning! 맛있는!! Next time I’m going to start adding some meat instead of the egg. Thank you so much!! You’re like the korean mom I never had…

God bless
i just made this today and it was sooo yummy! thanks aeri!!
but i have one question. why is it that when i make this, mine starts to burn really easily. i have to end up pouring oil in constantly ><
hi irene,
maybe use lower temperature for your cooking. and keep stirring it.. ^^; thanks.
Hi Aeri, this recipe looks delicious and I cannot wait to this out. I recently visited my local Hmart and got kimchi fried rice. I was trying to figure out the meat used but I can’t seem to place my tongue on it. It was cut up pieces of beef or pork, not quite sure. Can you tell me what what kind of meat you would add? (example: pork belly fat)
hi Samantha,
well.. it’s hard to guess without tasting it.. I liked to add.. some chopped ham in it for my kimchi fried when I was in Korea.. korean ham taste a little different from normal American ham..anyway.. I guess.. they (the restaurant you tried) used pork for the fried rice…
Hi!
I recently found your website and am very excited to try all the recipes you have. You make them look really easy so it is perfect for a student like me.

hi Franco Ooi,
oh.. best fried rice ?? thanks..hehe
Nice to meet you.
Hope to see you more often.
Hi Aeri, I think I’ve seen that you like communicating with your fans
I’m a big fan! Your videos and photos always look delicious! I cooked your kimchi fried rice today;; it was great! But i was wondering, what does ‘bokkeum’ translate to in English? Is it ‘fried’? And if so, what is ‘joRim’? Hehe sorry
Keep up the fantastic work!
hi Alfie,
yes.. “bokkeum” means “fried”..not deep frying.. it’s just frying things with a little bit of oil. “jorim” means you cook (fry) something with some broth.. or oil.. water.. with seasonings.. and while you are cooking.. the broth (liquid) will be reduced mostly.. that’s jorim.. ^^ Nice to meet you.
thanks for your reply! cool
i understand
so how about “bokki”? (like from tteokbokki) does that have an english translation/is it similar to joRim? my mum really likes your recipes when i make them for her
) thankyou!
nice to meet you too
hi Alfie,
Good question.. ^^
Bokkeum means fried.. it can be adjective and noun.. so it’s more like.. explain what the status of something.. in this case.. usually food.. ex) fried rice.. (bokkeum Bab)
“bokki” is describe of the action… “fryihg” .. so tteokbokki means.. frying sticky rice cakes..
Ahhh wow
another great answer! Hehe thankyou, I hadnt thought about bokkeum and bokki being related but now you’ve said that I can see
Enjoy Chuseok to you and your family
ㄱamsahamnida!

Thanks for your yummy recipes! I love this one because it is simple and easy to prepare as i am learning how to cook from your website.
Hi July,
Nice to meet you !!!
You are welcome. Aha… so you are a vegetarian ??? I hope you can find many vegetarian recipes here. thanks
how can i tell if my kimchi is ready?
hi WKKeoh,
there is no rule when you can eat… because some people like to eat fresh..and some people like to eat old.. sour kimchi… so…. it’s hard to tell it.. but typically.. in week or 2 weeks.. the fermenting process will be the best for the flavor.. thanks..
hi aeri, i just made kimchi using your recipe few days ago and according to your video it will be well fermented in a week’s time right? so i was searching for dishes which i can cook with kimchi and ended up watching this
anyway, just one quick question. Do i use freshly cooked rice or rice left overnight? because for chinese fried rice, we usually use rice left overnight instead of freshly cooked ones.
hi WKKeoh,
I hope your kimchi turns out great.. it can be a little different depending on the temperature of your refrigerator..but yes.. usually.. about 1 or 2 weeks.. it will be fermented.. You can use both freshly cooked rice or left over rice.. it doesn’t matter much.. fried rice is good dish to use left over rice.. but for the taste.. I will say.. not much different.. thanks
Hi Aeri, I made kimchi fried rice last night with your recipe, it was soooooo yummy. Thank you so much for sharing ^^ 요리왕 애리

The kimchi liquid… where do you get them. I buy my kimchi from the market, and they did not have a lot of the liquid! Look good by the way
hi Khanh Nguyen,
If you make your own kimchi at home..or buy it from store.. usually the jar that you keep your kimchi will have kimchi liquid too.. yes.. it’s not a lot..but you get some ^^ hehe.. thanks
I’m going to make this dish tomorrow. Wish me luck, as I tried it before using another recipe and thought it was just so-so.
I also made kimbap following your video, and it came out quite nice, I’d say. I liked it so much I even took pics of it, haha.
Keep up the good work!
hi Mandra,
how was your dish ?? ^^
oh.. you took your kimbap picture ?? I want to see it..hehe thanks !!!
I’ve made kimchi fried rice before and i didn’t like it. It doesn’t have a lot of flavors. I had to add soy sauce to give it some flavor. Do you know another way to cook kimchi fried rice?
Hi Pak,
You mean.. you tried my fried kimchi rice recipe and didn’t like it ??? oops..if it is… I don’t know how I can help you. I think the way I made is authentic… somepeople add red pepper paste in their fried kimchi rice. sorry for not that helpful answer..
おいしかった!!

i made this for breakfast today. (yes, i said breakfast – haha) aeri is right – the key to this dish is well fermented kimchi and adding sugar is key as well. this was SO GOOD. i think i’m gonna have myself another bowl….. bye!

Hi Aeri~
Today was the first time I cooked Kimchi fried rice without my parents. It went well so I am happy. My family thinks its delicious. My family loves spicy food. I bought a small container of Jong Kajib Kimchi and used up all the sauce. Thank you for teaching me since my parents are always busy. I am grateful. Aeri is the best~~
* Sorry if I made any grammar or spelling mistakes with my Korean. I grew up in Canada so my Korean is not the best but I love Korean food far more than Western food (example: burgers, fries, and others). Its also more healthy so thanks again! My parents were impressed.
Hi, 은혜
Oh~~~Your Korean sentences are soooooo cute !! I read it again and again. I’m very proud of you because you made very delicious kimchi fried rice for the first time by yourself. Good job !! You grew up in English so.. it’s amazing you can use Korean also. Thank you very much for your special comments. You made me happy.
