Thick Noodles

우동, 자장 면, UDong, JaJang Myeon

These thick noodles are for special dishes like JjaJangMyun (자장면), Udong (우동), or JjamBbong (짬뽕). You can get them dried, frozen, or fresh. Personally, I like the fresh noodles the most and dry noodles the least. Cook the noodles in boiling water for about 6 to 8 minutes, unless the directions for your noodles tell otherwise. Then rinse the noodles quickly in cold water several times before you serve them – that will make the noodles more chewy and elastic.

  • Use:
    JjaJangMyun, Udong, JjamBbong

  • Storage:
Keep in the cabinet (dry noodles), refrigerator (fresh noodles), or freezer (frozen noodles).

  • Types:
Dried Noodles, Fresh Noodles, Frozen Noodles

  • Short Korean lesson: *^^*
    NaengJangGo (냉장고) = Refrigerator

I wasn’t able to find this brand in the store. Could udon be used as a substitute in jajyangmyun?

    • Aeri Lee

      hi lisa,
You mean.. that thick but soft noodle for Japanese Udon ?? if that’s what you are asking.. I will say no..because it will be too soft. Maybe you can use thick spaghetti noodles instead… that texture will be better than udon noodle..

I wonder what these are called in Chinese, because I can’t find any Korean brand of this type of noodles in Chinese shops here :(

    • Aeri Lee

      Hi gbb,
If you can go to a Korean grocery store, write down the name for the dish, jajangmyun or udong…and ask the owner… you want thick noodles for them. If you go to a Chinese store.. I think. thick noodle will work for it. sorry I don’t know the Chinese words.

Thank you. We don’t have any Korean stores here, only Chinese, but they have some Korean foods. I think I’ll take a piece of paper with the name of the dish written in Chinese :)
