Potato Side-dish

The Korean potato side-dish, GamJa JoRim is an easy and yummy non-spicy Korean side-dish using potatoes. The flavor of soy sauce mixed with sweetness with the texture of potatoes gives you a great taste for a side-dish. You can make a small amount of this side-dish for one meal, but also you can also make a lot and keep it in the refrigerator. It is a popular side-dish for school lunch boxes in Korea. I hope you will like this. It has been while since I cooked something to post. It was very happy to do this again. More recipes will be posted as I get back into the swing of things. hehe :)

Thank you very much for all the comments and congratulations on my son’s birth. I’m sorry that I couldn’t reply every single messages but I really enjoyed reading your messages. I almost feel normal and Bryson is doing very good. He makes me happy everyday, even I feel tired. ;)

Short Korean Lesson: *^^*

  • MulYeout (물엿) = Corn Syrup
  • Ggul (꿀) = Honey

Main Ingredients:

  • 3 Medium Sized Potatoes (2 Cups)
  • ½ Cup Water
  • 2 Tbsp Oil
  • 2½ Tbsp Soy Sauce
  • 2 Tbsp Corn Syrup
  • 1-1½ Tbsp Sugar
  • 1 Tbsp Minced Garlic
  • ⅛ tsp Fine Sea Salt
  • ½ tsp Sesame Seeds

Yield: 2 Servings

gamja_jorim_01-
Cut 3 medium sized potatoes (2 cups) into ½ inch cubes.

gamja_jorim_02-
In a heated pan, with 2 Tbsp of oil, add the chopped potatoes.

gamja_jorim_03-
Fry the potatoes for 5 minutes on medium-high until they are ⅓ cooked.

gamja_jorim_04-
After 5 minutes, add ½ cup of water, 2½ Tbsp of soy sauce, 2 Tbsp of corn syrup, 1-1½ Tbsp of sugar, 1 Tbsp of minced garlic.

gamja_jorim_05-
Cook it for 5 more minutes on medium-high.

gamja_jorim_06-
Taste it and if you need to, add ⅛ tsp of fine sea salt. Depending on your taste you can adjust the amount of the salt.

gamja_jorim_07-
Cook until the liquid is reduced to a paste, which should take about 5 minutes.

gamja_jorim_08-
Reduce the temperature to medium and fry 5 to 7 more minutes until the potatoes are completely cooked. Then add ½ tsp of sesame seeds.

gamja_jorim_09-
It’s done. :)

gamja_jorim_10-

This side-dish tastes both good when it’s warm or cool. Serve it with rice and other Korean side-dishes. Enjoy !!! :)

These days, I have to make food for my dad & myself, my mom is in Korea to visit family.
So, I found everywhere how to make side dishes. And I finally found you in youtube and tried 감자조림. It was really delicious and so easy !!!
But I didn’t know what corn syrup was so I used maple syrup..
Tomorrow, I’ll try 순두부찌개 hehe

Your precious baby boy is absolutely adorable! Love your blog and I have a request. I’m a native Texan who loves all varieties of cuisine. There’s an amazing supermarket in my area called Super H Mart that’s primarily a Korean store. I want to learn to cook more Korean dishes and use the wonderful ingredients that are available to me. When you blog could you give some more descriptions and English translations for the Korean ingredients you cook with for those of us who want to learn to cook Korean but aren’t familiar with the ingredients? Thanks so much!!!

    hi Kearby,
Oh.. you have H mart around you ??? I really envy you. I don’t have that kind of big Korean grocery store around here. Your request is very valuable. I will try to do that in the future.. thanks for your good suggestion. Enjoy Korean cooking !!!

Just one request. Can you put the name of ingredients in English and korean both, so that it will be easy for me to buy from market. I will prepare the list and show the shop owner… ha ha haa… Thanks and please continue your nice work…

Great to read your new post and that you and your son are doing well.
I love potatoes. This dish looks very tasty.
Ahh, another thing on the side, I have made tuna kimchi jjigae with your recipe and I really loved it. Thank you so much for that recipe. Especially the great tip of using can of tuna in oil made it taste so good.
Even though my kimchi wasn’t super sour , the kimchi jjigae still tasted delicious.
