Soybean Curd with Rice

Yube Chobap is a Korean style Japanese food. Korea and Japan are very close in distance, there were also various relationships with each other throughout history. As a result, there are some foods that Korea and Japan got from each other and changed, such as Korean style chap-ssal tteok (mochi) that was from Japan. Or in the other case, and example would be Japanese style kimoochi (kimchi) that was from Korea. Anyway, when I was little, I’ve never seen yubu chobap or other kinds of sushi, then at sometime, people started to eat sushi and it became popular in Korea. Since the way to make this dish is super easy, people often make this for picnics (along with Kimbap) or for a party. The rice tastes similar to the rice for sushi which has a vinegar and sugar flavor in it. You can make everything from scratch, but there are some companies that sell a ready-made pack. All you need is cooked rice, some vegetables (if you want extra vegetables), and that pack. So today, I’m going to show you how to use that package. Depending on your taste, you can add chopped burdock root or other kinds of vegetables that you like. I tried different kinds of sweet peppers for this recipe, and I enjoyed eating this. My husband doesn’t like tufu and sweet and sour flavor much, so I guessed he will not like this one. My guessing was right. After he tried some of the seasoned rice, he didn’t want to eat anymore. oops ~~ So I ate all 16 chobaps alone. haha… Anyway, if you like sushi, you might like this dish.

Short Korean Lesson: *^^*

  • YuBu (유부) = Soybean Curd
  • Cho (초) = Vinegar
  • Bap (밥) = Rice

Ingredients:

  • 1 Pack Seasoned Soybean Curd (Including sauce)
  • 2 Bowls Cooked Rice
  • 2 Tbsp Finely Chopped Onion
  • 1 Tbsp Finely Chopped Carrot
  • 1½ Tbsp Finely Chopped Green Sweet Pepper
  • 1½ Tbsp Finely Chopped Red Sweet Pepper
  • 1½ Tbsp Finely Chopped Yellow Sweet Pepper
  • Some Salt for Vegetables

Yield: 16 Pieces YouBu ChoBap

soybean_curd_with_rice_02-
Prepare a package of seasoned soybean curd with sauce.

soybean_curd_with_rice_03-
Finely chop the onion, carrot, and 3 different kinds of sweet peppers.

soybean_curd_with_rice_04-
Fry the onion and carrot on high without oil.

soybean_curd_with_rice_05-
When the onion and carrot are almost cooked, add the sweet peppers and fry about 30 seconds more.

soybean_curd_with_rice_06-
Add some salt to taste. This is read for mixing into the rice.

soybean_curd_with_rice_07-
Squeeze the liquid out of the seasoned soybean curd. This package is already prepared, so simply use the soybean curd without cooking it.

soybean_curd_with_rice_08-
In a bowl, add 2 bowls of cooked rice, and add the sauce from the pack. You can make your own sauce if you only buy the soybean curd, but this package already has the sauce for the rice in it.

soybean_curd_with_rice_09-
Add the dried vegetable flake pack in it, then stir it gently.

soybean_curd_with_rice_10-
As you see, the rice doesn’t have enough vegetables in it now. That’s the reason why I prepared extra vegetables. Add the fried vegetables in it. Mix well. This makes the rice very colorful, and give it a better taste.

soybean_curd_with_rice_11-
Open the soybean curd like the picture. It looks like a pocket.

soybean_curd_with_rice_12-
Firmly pack the rice into the curd.

It looks very yummy. You can serve this with pickled ginger, onion, or garlic. Enjoy! :)

Hey, thank you so much for this post. My mum had bought a package of the seasoned soybean curd that came with the sauce recently, and I was not sure how to put the ingredients together. This helped a lot! Thanks again! =]
