Yield: 3 Servings
Short Korean Lesson
- GolBaengi (골뱅이) = Sea Snail
- GolBaengi (골뱅이) = Sea Snail
Video Instructions
Main Ingredients
- 1 Can Sea Snails (GolBaengI) (1 Cup)
- 1 Cucumber (1 Cup)
- ½ Onion (½ Cup)
- 1 Carrot (⅓ Cup)
- 1 Handful Cabbage or Romain Lettuce
- 2-3 Green Onions
- 1 Red Hot Pepper & 1 Green Hot Pepper
- 5 Sesame Leaves (Optional)
Sauce Ingredients
- 3 Tbsp Red Pepper Paste
- 1 Tbsp Red Pepper Powder
- ½ Tbsp Soy Sauce
- 2-2½ Tbsp Sugar
- 2-2½ Tbsp Vinegar
- ⅛ Tsp Garlic Powder
- ½ Tbsp Sesame Seeds
Directions
Drain the liquid from the can.
Rinse the sea snails and drain the water.
If the snails are too big, cut them into bite sized pieces.
Cut 1 cup worth of cucumber.
Slice ½ of an onion (about ½ cup) thinly.
Chop 1 handful of cabbage (or Romain lettuce) into bite sized pieces. If you use cabbage, slice it into thin strips.
Cut 1 carrot (about ⅓ cup) thinly. Cut 1 hot red pepper and 1 hot green pepper into ½-inch pieces.
Cut 2-3 green onions thinly. I didn’t have sesame leaves, but if you can get them, it would be very good to add 5 of them. Slice them like the cabbage.
In a small bowl, combine 3 Tbsp of red pepper paste, 1 Tbsp of red pepper powder, ½ Tbsp of soy sauce, 2-2½ Tbsp of sugar, 2-2½ Tbsp of vinegar, ⅛ Tsp of garlic powder, and ½ Tbsp of sesame seeds. Mix them all together. As I mentioned, start with 2 Tbsp of sugar and vinegar and add more, depending on your tastes.
In a large bowl, add all of the sea snails and the prepared vegetables.
Pour the sauce on the vegetables and mix.
Does it looks delicious? If you don’t want to eat sea snails, you can substitute them with boiled squid or shrimp. Thank you! See you again~~~

Aeri says
Hi, MrsDarth

MrsDarth says
How did you LOSE 7 pounds!?!? Did you have bad morning sickness? You said it’s getting better, right? Thankfully, I don’t have any morning sickness and I actually GAINED 7 pounds from all of the eating and sleeping I do. =P Since I’ve been pregnant, I’ve been craving meat. I eat so much galbi and spicy pork! Do you crave anything? How many weeks are you? 7 or 8? =) Please take care of yourself especially during the 1st trimester.
Mimi
Aeri says
Hi, Mimi
Yep… I lost 7 pounds.. that makes me concern… so I try to eat more even I don’t want to eat…. wow… I’m happy to hear that you are good… Your baby is very nice to you..;) You are totally opposite to me.. I don’t want to eat meat at all.. especially chicken.. In Korea.. we think… if you have girl… want to eat fruits and vegetables but not meat.. and if you have boy.. you want to eat meat.. like that.. we can see if it’s right later.. 😉 I was craving kimbap a lot nowadays.. and one of my Korean friend made kimbap 2 days ago.. so yummy…hehe I guess..i’m 11 or 12 weeks now.. but not sure.. how about you ?? next wednesday..I have the first doctor’s appointment. Have a good weekend.
layping says
don’t worry,my friend. it’s highly normal to lose some weight during the first trimester. in the coming months, your body will start putting maternal fat. so, get ready! please don’t make yourself eat when you don’t feel like it. just take your vitamins. ^take it easy!!
Aeri says

Hi Aeri! I’ve been coming to your site for a few weeks now and am a big fan! I’ve heard of gol bang ee moo chim but have never tried it before. I’ll definately try to make it sometime, it sounds easy enough and I think I can tackle it. 🙂 Especially if they sell it in a can hehe. My parents still live in Korea, and I’m in New York, so it’s hard learning Korean dishes, since I can’t turn to my mom for help all of the time. Your site has helped me a lot and has been really inspirational! I also started my own food blog! So far I only have one reciepe (I thought I’d start out with something super easy) but I hope to continue updating like you. It’s a lot more time consuming that I thought! You should drop by and check it out if you have time. http://www.happilyeatingmywaythroughlife.blogspot.com. Thanks again 🙂

Hello, I love this recipe and I am making it for my boyfriends birthday. Could you suggest a couple of other dishes that would compliment it? Something good for the summer?
Ha says
Hi Aeri,
I was searching for korean food during pregnancy and found your blog. Can I ask you a question? I am pregnant and I like to eat dishes that included gochujang. Do you think it is safe to consume gochujang during pregancy? May thanks
Aeri Lee says
hi Ha,
Yes, I gave birth twice and both times, I ate gochujang without much problem. I do know that it is better to avoid too spicy food for your baby though. If it’s once in a while, it will be just fine. 🙂 Enjoy your gochujang without a concern. ^^ Congratulations on your pregnancy btw. I wish you the best luck for smooth pregnancy and delivery. 🙂 God bless you and your baby.

I recently watched a Korean cooking program called Home Food Rescue where Chef Baek Jong Won taught his apprentice how to make delicious dishes using sea snails. He made a sea snail muchim which looked absolutely yummy! Unfortunately, I didn’t write down the recipe. But I am happy to find a somewhat similar recipe here! I will definitely give your recipe a try soon! And will definitely add Korean thin noodle to make it a meal on its own! 🙂
Aeri Lee says
hi Mildred Yeo,
Oh, Baek Jong Won.. Yes, he is very popular in Korea now. You are right, just add Korean thin noodles and make the dish you wanted to try. 🙂 I hope you enjoy this recipe. Thanks
