Spicy Chicken with Vegetables

Today, I will show you how to make a very popular Korean chicken dish, DakDoriTang. It is chicken and vegetables cooked with a spicy sauce to give it great flavor. Depending on your tastes, you can add or reduce the amount of red pepper powder and red pepper paste. My husband and I enjoyed this dish very much the other day. I hope you will like this too.

Short Korean Lesson: *^^*

  • Kal (칼) = Knife
  • DoMa (도마) = Cutting Board

Main Ingredients:

  • 1 Whole Chicken
  • 2 Cups Onion
  • 2 Cups Potato
  • 1 Cup Carrot
  • 3 Green Onions
  • 1-2 Hot Peppers (Optional)
  • 1½ Cup Water

For Chicken:

  • 1 Tbsp Cooking Wine
  • ¼ tsp Salt
  • ⅛ tsp Black Pepper Powder

Sauce Ingredients:

Yield: 4 Servings

Cut the chicken into 3×3 inch pieces. Don’t remove the skin, fat, or bones for this dish because they give it good flavor.

Marinate the chicken with 1 Tbsp of cooking wine, ¼ tsp of salt, and ⅛ tsp of black pepper powder for at least 10 minutes.

Combine 5 Tbsp of red pepper paste, 3 Tbsp of red pepper powder, 2 Tbsp of soy sauce, ½ Tbsp of cooking wine, 1 Tbsp of sugar, 1 Tbsp of corn syrup, 2 Tbsp of minced garlic, 1 tsp of sesame seeds, 1 tsp of sesame oil, and 1 pinch of black pepper powder.

Mix the ingredients.

Cut 2 cups of onions, 2 cups of potatoes, 1 cup of carrots, 3 green onions, and 1 or 2 hot peppers into big chunk (1 or 1½ inch cubes).

spicy_chicken_with_vegetables_07-
In a big pan, place the chicken.

spicy_chicken_with_vegetables_08-
Add the potatoes, onions and carrots on top of the chicken.

spicy_chicken_with_vegetables_09-
Pour the sauce on top.

spicy_chicken_with_vegetables_10-
Then, pour 1½ cup of water on it.

spicy_chicken_with_vegetables_11-
While it’s cooking, occasionally stir it so that all of the ingredients will get covered with the sauce. Cook it for 30 to 35 minutes on high until the chicken and potatoes are completely cooked.

spicy_chicken_with_vegetables_13-
Reduce the temperature to low, and add the green onions and hot peppers. Cook 2 more minutes, and then turn off the heat. If you don’t want your food too spicy, skip the hot peppers.

spicy_chicken_with_vegetables_14-

Serve this dish with rice and other Korean side-dishes. You can also pour some of this on top of rice for a main course, like curry and rice. Enjoy this delicious Korean food.

Hello Aeri! How are you? We share the same surname! :) Actually, I am not Korean but my husband is! So, it has been great to find your recipes! They are so easy to follow and they taste great! I made the Kimchi Fried Rice as well as the Spicy Chicken Stew with Vegetables yesterday and guess what. They both tasted awesome! My husband rated them 11/10! ;)

I do have a question for the stew recipe: When I place the marinated chicken in the pan, do I also put the left-over marinate sauce (i.e. the 1 Tbsp of cooking wine, ¼ tsp of salt, and ⅛ tsp of black pepper powder) in the pan together or do I just discard it?

“Come to my house Friday and I will make you suffer.”

SuJin’s English has improved over the past three decades, but this is what she made for me on our second dinner date. Delicious and filling and got me to thinking about making our dinner dates routine.

Enjoy your children while you have them Aeri. He will be one of the smartest boys in his class, will go off to college and then to a career. We are in Europe, but our kids live and work in America and Asia. Many good meals like this though seal family bonds.

I made this yesterday and it was so delicious : ) I used a little less chicken and added two blocks of firm tofu chopped into small blocks. The delicious sauce makes this a great dish to have over noodles/pasta too. Thanks for the recipe and video!

finger licking goooood. a classic korean chicken dish. sweet and spicy. ^my husband’s favourite. agreed that it’s best to use chopped whole chicken instead of boneless one.

Aeri,
Got a question…I have seen this recipe on the internet before, and the recipe uses a slow cooker to cook this. Do you think that would be okay? Have you ever used a slow cooker for this meal or any other Korean recipe?

    Aeri writes:
      reply August 11th, 2009 at 2:42 PM

    Hi, fredaj20
We usually cook on the stove.. but there are some Korean food that needs to be cooked for a long time on low temperature. I think you can use slower cooker for this recipe too.. :) Thanks !!

WOW :)

This is looks really good! I’ve found that when using chicken in stews or, it is best to NOT to use bonelesss chicken. the bones in the chicken make the sauce more flavorful and the chicken keeps it shape alot better, rather than falling apart and disappearing into the stew. :)

*miss ya – it’s been a while. I’ll be in touch <3

    Aeri writes:
      reply August 11th, 2009 at 2:40 PM

    Hi, farleen
I agree… the bones.. skin and fat give good flavor..
haha.. dsappearing into the stew.. funny

Bryson is kicking me a lot lately… We miss you. :)
